INTRODUCTION
The following tables describe the ANSI character set that is used by
ClassWeb for character values above 127. For character values below
128, standard ASCII is used (0-9, a-z, A-Z, etc.). The characters
in these tables all have their eighth bit set and fall into three categories:
-
Composed Characters - These are pre-composed
combinations of a character and a diacritic (i.e.: Á
Ê Ñ). When a composed character is exported from ClassWeb
in the MARC format, they are decomposed into their separate diacritical
mark and underlying character. When they are imported, they are combined
to make a single composed character.
-
Digraphs and Diacritics - These
are pure digraphs and diacritical marks. These usually don't look
anything like what they are supposed to on your screen because of the limited
font support available on most computers.
-
Non-MARC Characters - These are all
remaining characters that don't belong in the other two lists. They
are supported by your computer's character set but not by the MARC format
(i.e., the copyright symbol ©). You can use them in local notes
and that's about it.
The columns and their meanings are as follows:
-
Character - These are the characters, digraphs or diacritical marks
that you are trying to create.
-
Accent - This column only appears in the composed character table.
It is the accent mark that modifies the base character.
-
Win95 - The four digit numbers in this column are input by users
of the Windows 95 and higher operating system to create a particular character
in conjunction with the ALT key.
-
ANSI - The three digit numbers in this column are needed by users
of all other operating systems to create a given character.
-
ASCII - These are the numeric values of the characters within a
ClassWeb database. They are also the value that is used with the ClassWeb
ASCII export and import utilities.
-
MARC - These are the character or characters that are output by
the MARC export utility of ClassWeb. In the case of composed characters,
there will be more than one value in this column, separated by commas.
Each value can be either a decimal number or a plain ASCII character inside
a pair of single quotes.
INPUTTING
SPECIAL CHARACTERS
First, locate the character you want to create. Wherever possible,
used composed characters as they look the best when displayed. Next,
make note of the number in either the Win95 or ANSI column corresponding
to your selection. The only difference between these two columns
is the addition of a leading zero in the Win95 column. Otherwise,
their numeric values are the same.
Finally, if you are using Microsoft Windows 95 and higher, hold down
the ALT key on your keyboard and type in the four digit Win95 value on
your numeric keypad and then let go of the ALT key. You must use
the numeric keypad and not the normal number keys above the QWERTY portion
of your keyboard. For example, to create a Cedilla C, hold down the
ALT key, enter the digits 0199 on the numeric keypad and then let go of
the ALT key.
If you are using any other operating system, please check its documentation
for how to input non-ASCII characters.
